What are pleached trees? A stunning, versatile garden backdrop

what are pleached treesWhat are pleached trees?

Pleaching is way of taming and teasing tree branches to create a narrow frame, formal screen or hedge. Tree growers tie and interlace the supplest, young shoots into a frame.

Why choose a pleached tree?

Firstly, you’d probably choose more than one. Why? Because they’re perfect for creating tree-lined walkways, arbours, tunnels and non-imposing, nice-to-see-over-the-fence screening. They create an instantly beautiful backdrop and the choice of foliage, flower and variety is numerous enough to lend itself to any taste or preference.

Which trees are great for pleaching?

The list is pretty limitless – any variety that lends itself to training. Our most popular varieties are hornbeam (Carpinus), lime (Tilia), ornamental pear (Pyrus), beech (Fagus), photinia and evergreen oak (Quercus ilex).

How are trees pleached?

It’s complicated and you don’t pleach a tree overnight! Skilled tree growers select young, whippy plants. They plant them in the winter and in their first years of growth, they prune in the winter, too. Then, each summer, they train and tie new shoots into a cane framework. They can be plaited with neighbouring trees too. Once this intricate branch lattice is established and strong enough to support itself, the supports can be removed.

Sandy Pembroke 2 x World Title Kickboxing Champion

Sandy Pembroke, 2 x World Title Kickboxing Champion

We like to be different.  We like to be ground-breaking.  So we’ve agreed to sponsor an overseas whizz who is vying for his 3rd World Title in Kick-Boxing.

Sandy Pembroke, now based in Canada, was born in London and first donned boxing gloves at the age of 2.  He moved from Sydney and then to Canada and after a journey through college football, he took up kickboxing and made his way through the ranks to Canadian Kickboxing Champion. Travelling all over the world, extending his fighting feats and building his kick-ass reputation, Pembroke doubled up with his Lecturing role at the University of South Australia, conducting his PhD studies under full scholarship.

As his lead sponsor in his kickboxing endeavours, allgrowth are happy to champion Sandy as he makes his bid for a third World title.  As an influential motivational speaker and social media specialist, he’s keeping us on our toes in that respect, too!

Find out more about Sandy and his kick-boxing prowess on his Facebook page.

We’ll be following Sandy’s progress and promoting his success in tune with his motto: ‪#‎AlwaysBeGiving‬ ‪#‎ABG‬.  Best of British, Sandy!

The allgrowth Experience

Before and afteryoutubeHornbeamWe like nothing better than seeing a planting project through from start to finish – and that’s from the first customer meeting to plan and select plants, right through to the site visits, planting and finishing touches.  We’ll stay in touch, too, just to make sure everything’s tickety-boo.  Sometimes it’s easier to show you – so we’ve a little Youtube visual where we’ve transformed a tired, overgrown leyland hedge boundary into, quite frankly, a bit of a stunner with pleached hornbeam and shrub underplanting.  Take a look…

New machinery takes allgrowth up in the world

TelehandlerTreeBig trees means big toys for production to play with.  Our Merlo Tele Handler 6010 (pictured right) lifts up to 6 tonnes of tree material and reaches up to 10 metres .  These bits of kit are vital tools in our armoury for lifting, placing and managing our large trees on the nursery.  Of utmost importance is ensuring our large trees are lifted, loaded and transported without a hint of damage to bark, branch or root.

Our experienced production team manage tree selection and preparation of planted material for our clients’ projects and need the latest kit to make their jobs both easier and safer.  And it’s our customers who ultimately benefit – trees arrive safe and sound and ready to thrive in their new environments.

Merlo 34. 7 and Allgrowth Production TeamStem Protection and Lifting CradleOur latest addition to the tree-lifting fleet is the Merlo 34.7.  Lifting just under 3.5 tonne up to 7 metres, it is fitted with specialist weighing equipment.   This allows to manage tree lifting on site and to keep our clients advised of what weights to contend with upon delivery.  The allgrowth production team, including Andrew and Steve, use the machinery to ensure all our tree stock is moved around and loaded efficiently and safely.

Foooooore!  From green – to green

GolfDayAug15 It’s true.  Here at allgrowth, we like a bit of golf – as do a handful of our clients.  So it made sense this Summer to take some time out, throw on our plus-fours and join up for a round of golf with friends.

Celebrating another great planting season (and the gaffer’s half-century!), the crew were invited to Celtic Manor in Wales for the allgrowth Annual Golf Event.  A great time was had by all, some stunning shots and putts and not a hook or a slice to be seen (no, honestly!).  And we couldn’t miss a photo opportunity at the 19th Hole either.

Thank you to all who took part from our suppliers, clients and associates.  We’ll be organising the next Event soon so shout up if you’d like to swing a few clubs with us.
